Collaborations.

The Collaborations cover photo is a work traded back and forth between two doodlists. A doodlist is a person who doodles. In this case, color was used and the piece was exchanged between Texas and Denmark. One doodlist begins a collaborative piece. It is then mailed to the other doodlist, who adds more content and perhaps color. This process continues until the piece is considered complete.
This work happens to be Chris's first hospital collaboration doodle.

The idea is really simple. Two people collaborate on a piece of art with doodling as an inspiration. Doodling is typically done relatively quickly and typically only involves one form of media—pens and/or pencils. With a Doodle Art piece any media can be used and a mixture of media is definitely encouraged, but not necessary. Writing utensils, chalk, paint… Whatever. There are only a couple of requirements: that the piece be started spontaneously and that plenty of room is left for the collaborator to add on.

One person starts a piece and then mails it to the other person. The person receiving adds to the first piece and starts their own piece. Then both of those pieces are mailed back to the first artist. In most cases, both artists have two opportunities with each piece. We call these exchanges passes. The exchanges/passes stop when both doodle artists feel each piece is complete.

It’s so incredibly fun to receive a project in the mail. You have no idea exactly what is inside. Each piece of art grows as a collaboration between the two artists. Two completely different styles often find a way to mesh together so the seams between the artists are transparent. It starts with the spontaneity at the heart of doodling and then grows to be a combination of doodling and maintaining. Each piece really seems to grow into itself—a spontaneous piece of art that grows through collaboration.  A playground of sorts for artists no matter the level of experience of each.
